Captioned Images Series: Still Stubborn Created: 01/05/2025 ![]() Allan Richardson sat cross legged in his living room, a cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth and a cold can of beer in his hand. The television blared as his favorite football team ran a play, the commentator’s excited voice barely audible over the roar of the crowd. Allan leaned forward, ignoring the dull ache that crept through his ribs whenever he moved too quickly. The Great Shift had been bad. Allan, previously a man in his thirties, had swapped bodies with a ten-year-old Asian girl. He was given a warning from the government that he oculdn't drink or smoke anymore. But how could he watch football without a beer and a smoke...and a bet on the game. "You need to cut back, Allan. Your body can't keep up with the way you're treating it. YOu ncan still watch football, but..." But Allan was stubborn, and if there was one thing he hated more than pain, it was being told what to do. "Cut back?" he muttered to himself, dragging on his cigarette and blowing out a cloud of smoke. "What does he know?" His wife, Marcy, appeared in the doorway, her arms crossed and her expression grim. "You need to take this seriously, Allan," she said, for what felt like the hundredth time. "Your body isn't what it used to be. You are a little girl now!" "I’m fine," Allan grumbled, waving her off without looking away from the screen. "Fine?" Marcy stepped closer, her voice rising. "You can barely breathe without coughing, your side hurts every time you stand up, and you're still downing beers like you're in college!" Marcy wanted to tell him that he is sitting too close to the TV and that the volumn was too loud, but those could wait. "Football’s on, Marcy," Allan said, his tone sharper now. "Can we not do this right now?" Marcy sighed deeply, shaking her head. "One day, Allan, you're going to wish you listened. And when that day comes, don’t expect me to pick up the pieces." With that, she turned and left the room, leaving Allan to his game and his vices. End. Made with Freepik Image Generator |
